Liberty Crochet Mural

With every stitch we dissent

After the shock of Roe v. Wade being overturned by the Supreme Court of the United States, outraged fiber artist Jen LaMastra designed and organized a national community protest: The Liberty Crochet Mural. Participants from around the country and world joined. Some people learned to crochet, some refreshed their dusty skills, and all wanted to be a part of something bigger than themselves.

Since June 2022, more than 25 other states have organized sister murals in their communities. It has been displayed at concerts, rallies, marches, government buildings, art galleries, synagogues, libraries, breweries, parks, universities, and women's health centers.

The Liberty Crochet Mural consists of 40 individual crocheted squares assembled into a 17ft x 11ft yarn mural. Standing before this collaborative handmade giant, with its 150,000 dissenting stitches, redefines crochet as a subversive act – a rally cry to the marginalized people with uteruses and their craft.

See what other states have done with their crochet swords on the battlefield, and join us in this national fight to save the right to choice. Reach out to start a mural in your community, or help with existing murals to find new venues, as well as, installing and deinstalling the mural. With every stitch we dissent.
